THE MEANING OF “WATER” IN THE KANJI WITH SANZUI「氵」RADICALS

Abstract

Japanese kanji character originates from China. The form, pronunciation and meaning of Chinese kanji were adapted in to the Japanese writing system. For non-native learners, the large amount, complex form and pronunciation of Japanese Kanji, create difficulties in memorizing kanji form and understanding kanji meaning. This paper is a qualitative research, which objectives are to analyze the semantic-relation between the radical “sanzui”「氵」within the kanji composed. This study focused on 19 kanji with “sanzui” 「氵」radicals, which was thought in basic kanji learning. The research was conducted using the Semantic Theory, Semiotic Theory and Kanji Radical Theories. As a result, kanji with “sanzui” (water)「氵」radicals, contributes the denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and reflected meaning of water.
